What's a Black Cat doing in the Mnemonic Abyss? Is it a manifestation of Reiko's doll?

I guess we'll have to see in the sequel

I thought it was a manifestation of Reiko's toy cat.

I have a small theory that it has something to do with the Girl in Red, but then it would be too complicated to explain

So yeah, I guess it's a manifestation of the black cat doll.

UPDATE: 'Kuroneko' literally means Black Cat. I don't know how that helps, though.

You could make a "Red Girl Theory" thread....wait, I guess there's already one.

I thought, since the black cat led you to the Mnemonic Abyss, he/she was like Reiko, or was Reiko's "familiar", because Reiko wants you to stay with her in the Mnemonic Abyss and if you fall into the abyss beyond a door, you die and become a wandering ghost. I followed the black cat and fell into the abyss once.

Well, Kuroneko is black cat in Japanese, you're right Simon, so that's why it's thought kitty's a manifestation of Reiko. I think that could be the case now too.

I think it's pretty obvious the black cat is just another incarnation of Reiko; she even has cat eyes herself.

The part in the hospital

is really the only overt time the cat actually tries to cause harm to the characters; every other time it seems to be trying to lead Rin and Chiyo to wherever they are supposed to go next.

I have that little scene from the hospital written down in my personal notes as "kitty don't like you no more."

Very, very interesting, PSuzuki! I never realized Reiko's cat eyes during the encounters when she just pops up right in your face

I believe that the black cat could be a good side of Reiko. Sometimes helping a character, sometimes leading them to their death. It could be that Reiko didn't know who Rin actually was until after the cat almost led Rin into the chasm (Aha, another article on the wiki).

If I remember correct, there is a part where I saw Reiko with cat eyes..
Going to try and find it, because it would be quiet helpful for a theory.
I myself believe that the black cat is part of Reiko's mind, so it will do as Reiko pleases.
First it helps you to gain your thrust, and then he uses the thrust to try and kill you.
It's kind of a complicated theory for a game tho...

Oh, but the part where Reiko has the close-up of her yellow cat-eyes, it's Rin's first part where she's in the school, and after she talks to Makoto in the Art Room. Try to leave the art room, the door shuts, and you turn around to see Reiko and the cutscene starts. Can't remember what the chapter's called though...
There are random parts where Reiko's eyes flash right in your face like the black cat....and I think that's in Rin's Chapter, The Lamentation, sometime.

I think that could be a possibility, about the cat gaining your trust.

You're welcome I like putting things on the Wiki, it's fun, and I like seeing what everyone else has put too. I'm glad The Black Page and the Wiki are here, there isn't a ton of stuff about The Calling on the internet....we're fixing that though! I hope Hudson will come here and look at everything sometime...everyone has good ideas (like in The Calling Sequel thread).

Yeah it would be awesome if Hudson used some of our ideas.

The black cat is Reiko or an incarnation of her ^______^ I read it on Calling Wiki. Not only that she has cat eyes, but she also has a black cat doll, and also, when you encounter the cat when you are Rin, it sometimes leads you to doors that lead to the mnemonic abyss, and when you are Chiyo, she warns you about going into certain doors. = )
